Early life and education
Yeoh was born in Ipoh, Malaysia, on August 6, 1962, to a local ethnic Malaysian Chinese family with Hokkien and Cantonese backgrounds. Yeoh is the daughter of Janet Yeoh and Yeoh Kian-teik (who died on 5 November 2014), a lawyer and MCA politician who founded the famed Sri Maju express bus service.

Yeoh has always loved to dance, having started ballet at the age of four. She was a primary student at Main Convent Ipoh, an all-girls secondary school in Ipoh. She travelled to the United Kingdom with her parents at the age of 15, where she was enrolled in a boarding school.
Yeoh went on to the Royal Academy of Dance in London, where he majored in ballet. However, due to a spinal accident, she was unable to pursue a career as a professional ballet dancer, so she turned to choreography and other forms of art. She went on to earn a BA in Creative Arts with a Drama minor.
