Golden comeback
Clarke was recalled for the South Africa trip in early 2006, after scoring well in ODIs and making his first first-class double century. For the April 2006 Tests against Bangladesh, he was chosen ahead of Andrew Symonds.
While Shane Watson was sidelined, two straight centuries in the second and third Ashes Tests against England helped Australia reclaim the Ashes and established Clarke’s place in the Test team.
Personal life
Throughout his career, Clarke suffered from persistent back pain. He was originally diagnosed when he was 17 years old when he was told he had disc degeneration.
Clarke quit the Australian Cricket tour of New Zealand in March 2010 for “personal reasons” and returned to Sydney.
On March 12, 2010, Clarke’s management announced that he and his then-fiancée, model Lara Bingle (now Worthington), had decided to end their engagement in a late-night press conference.
Clarke explained his decision to depart the New Zealand tour to GQ Australia in November 2010 “My choice was based on what I thought was the best course of action.
I value playing for my country so much that I decided that if I’m going to disappoint anyone, I shouldn’t be here – there’s someone else who could do a greater job than me. Going home was the best decision I could make at the time. That is a decision I do not regret.”
On May 15, 2012, Clarke married Kyly Boldy, a business owner and model. The pair has a daughter and attended Westfield Sports High School in Sydney together.
They announced their split on February 12, 2020, saying they had been officially separated for 5 months.
Clarke began dating fashion designer Pip Edwards in 2020, but their relationship ended in early 2021.
