Clarke was selected captain of the Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Twenty20 Big Bash League in 2013, although he never played a game for the Thunder owing to injury and international team obligations.
Clarke made his One Day International debut against England in Adelaide in January 2003, and his Test debut against India in October 2004.
Clarke was recalled for the South Africa trip in early 2006, after scoring well in ODIs and making his first first-class double century. For the April 2006 Tests against Bangladesh, he was chosen ahead of Andrew Symonds.
While Shane Watson was sidelined, two straight centuries in the second and third Ashes Tests against England helped Australia reclaim the Ashes and established Clarke’s place in the Test team.

Clarke explained his decision to depart the New Zealand tour to GQ Australia in November 2010 “My choice was based on what I thought was the best course of action.
I value playing for my country so much that I decided that if I’m going to disappoint anyone, I shouldn’t be here – there’s someone else who could do a greater job than me. Going home was the best decision I could make at the time. That is a decision I do not regret.”
On May 15, 2012, Clarke married Kyly Boldy, a business owner and model. The pair has a daughter and attended Westfield Sports High School in Sydney together.
They announced their split on February 12, 2020, saying they had been officially separated for 5 months.
Clarke began dating fashion designer Pip Edwards in 2020, but their relationship ended in early 2021.
