The only child of Rhonda and Chester Combs, Combs was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the family later relocated to Asheville, North Carolina, when he was eight years old.
He has been singing professionally since he was a young boy. Combs played football and sang in several vocal ensembles when a student at A. C. Reynolds High School, including a solo at Carnegie Hall.
