Oxenberg grew up in London after being born in New York City. She is the eldest daughter of Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia (born 1936) and her first husband, Jewish dressmaker and close friend of the Kennedy family Howard Oxenberg (1919–2010).
Christina Oxenberg is her sister. Princess Elizabeth is the only child of Prince Paul of Yugoslavia and Princess Olga of Greece and Denmark (who served as regent for his cousin’s eldest son, King Peter II of Yugoslavia).
