Tomei was born on December 4, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, to English teacher Adelaide “Addie” Tomei and trial lawyer Gary A. Tomei. She was partly reared by her paternal grandparents and has a younger brother, actor Adam Tomei.
Tomei’s parents are both Italian, with her father’s ancestors hailing from Tuscany, Calabria, and Campania, and her mother’s from Tuscany and Sicily. In 1982, she received her diploma from Edward R. Murrow High School.
Tomei grew up in Brooklyn’s Midwood neighborhood. She was charmed by the Broadway performances that her theater-loving parents took her to and was drawn to acting as a career while she was there.
She played Hedy LaRue in a school performance of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at Andries Hudde Junior High School. She was also a student at the Albee School Of Dance. She went to Boston University for a year after graduating from high school.
