Lee has been selected for the Australian Under 17 and Under 19 teams. He was pushed out of the Australian under-19 team for their tour of India in March 1994 owing to stress fractures in his lower back, forcing him to change his bowling motion to reduce the impact on his back.

In the 1995–96 season, he was given the scholarship to attend the AIS Australian Cricket Academy. Jason Gillespie and Mike Hussey, both internationals, were among his peers.

Debut days

Lee was selected to play for the Australian A squad on a tour of South Africa just a month after making his first-class debut.

He took two wickets, but stress fractures in his back from a previous injury resurfaced in that match, and Lee was forced to wear a back brace for over three months.

Test career

There were appeals in the late 1990s for Lee to be named to the national team. Lee’s debut impressed captain Steve Waugh, who also played with him for New South Wales, and he campaigned for his selection in the national team.

In 1999, he was named to the final 14 for the Test series against Pakistan, however, he did not make the starting 11.
