Shirley Katherine and Arnett Grant Bening raised Bening in Topeka, Kansas. Her mother was a soloist and church singer, and her father was a sales trainer and insurance salesman. Her parents, both Iowa natives, were devout Episcopalians and staunch Republicans. She is primarily of German and English ancestry.
