Shirley Katherine and Arnett Grant Bening raised Bening in Topeka, Kansas. Her mother was a soloist and church singer, and her father was a sales trainer and insurance salesman. Her parents, both Iowa natives, were devout Episcopalians and staunch Republicans. She is primarily of German and English ancestry.
She is the youngest of four children, with two elder brothers, Bradley and Byron, and an older sister, Jane. In 1959, her family relocated to Wichita, Kansas, where she lived her early years. Her father accepted a job with a company in San Diego, California, and the family relocated there in 1965.
In junior high, she made her acting debut as Maria in The Sound of Music. She studied theatre at Patrick Henry High School and graduated in 1975.
