Early life
Irving was born in Palo Alto, California on September 10, 1953. Her father, Jules Irving (born Jules Israel), was a film and stage director, and her mother, Priscilla Pointer, is an actress. Her brother, David Irving, is a writer and filmmaker, and her sister, Katie Irving, is a singer and a deaf kid teacher.
Irving’s father was Jewish, and one of Irving’s maternal great-great-grandfathers was Jewish as well. Irving was reared in her mother’s Christian Science beliefs, with no religious traditions in her family.
She grew up in San Francisco, California, where her father co-founded the Actor’s Workshop and she participated in local theatre as a child. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, she studied acting at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, where she appeared in various performances. She also attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art to further her education.
Irving moved to New York City with her family when she was a teenager when her father was named director of the Lincoln Center Repertory Theater.
