International career
Test career
In November 2011, Rahane was named to the Test squad to face the West Indies. Rahane was in the squad for 16 months and saw seven players make their debuts while he was there.
During that time, his limited-overs cricket (ODI and T20I) performance was lacking, as he averaged about 25 in both ODI and T20I cricket, and struggled for form in series against Pakistan and England (in January 2013).
One-Day International career
Rahane was selected for the India limited-overs squad for the tour of England after two consecutive hundreds in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia (201).
As a replacement for opener Virender Sehwag, he made his debut against England at Chester-le-Street.
India’s chances of winning their first match of the 2011 summer against England were dashed by a washout at Chester-le-Stree, despite Rahane’s 40 runs at a strike rate of 90.90.
T20I career
In August 2011, Rahane made his international debut for India in a Twenty20 International against England at Manchester’s Old Trafford Cricket Ground.
In this match, he made a half-century (61 of 49) against an England assault that included Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, and Tim Bresnan. Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid played his only T20I match in this match.
Career in the Indian Premier League
Rajasthan Royals purchased Rahane for the 2012 Indian Premier League season. He previously played for the Mumbai Indians but only saw limited action.
Then he grabbed the attention of Shane Watson of the Rajasthan Royals, who had seen him score an 80-ball century in the second innings of a three-day game against Australia A in 2010.
Rahul Dravid and Watson persuaded Rahane to open the innings after buying him from the Mumbai Indians.
“Being able to open the batting with Rahul Bhai offered me the opportunity to express myself and show off everything I’d learned over the years,” Rahane remarked.
