Early Life

Madhubala was born on February 14, 1933, in Delhi, British India, as Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi. She was the sixth of Ataullah Khan and Aayesha Begum’s eleven children. Khan was a Pashtun from the Yusufzai clan, and after a long period of unemployment, he found a position with the Imperial Tabacco Company in 1925.

He despised his job due to his hatred of tobacco, but he persevered in order to pay off the obligations he had accrued in his early days. Khan was feared by all of his family members, including Madhubala, because of his short temper among his coworkers.

Rai Bahadur Chunnilal, the general manager of Bombay Talkies studio in Bombay, first noticed Madhubala in 1941. Khan eventually transferred his family to the Malad suburbs of Bombay in the summer of 1941.

Chunnilal signed Madhubala to a juvenile character in his company’s production Basant after receiving consent from the studio authorities. Basant was a hit when released in July 1942, but the studio didn’t need a young performer at the moment, so her contract was terminated.

Sharma cast Madhubala, who is 14 years old, as the heroine in Neel Kamal. Shah objected to Sharma’s choice and had Madhubala’s contract cancelled, allowing her to collaborate with Sharma.

Sharma was struck by Madhubala’s industrious and helpful nature, having directed her in Mumtaz Mahal (1944) and Dhanna Bhagat (1945). Due to her young age and relative inexperience, the industry reacted negatively, but the filmmaker quickly began filming with Madhubala and Raj Kapoor as the film’s lead performers.

Madhubala was approached by filmmaker Frank Capra around the same period, who wanted to give her a shot in Hollywood, but her father turned down Capra’s offer. Nonetheless, Madhubala had established herself as a great Bollywood star by this time.
