James was born Kevin George Knipfing in Mineola, New York, on April 26, 1965. He was born and raised in Stony Brook, New York. He is the second son of Janet Knipfing, an office worker, and Joseph Valentine Knipfing Jr., the owner of an insurance agency.
His father is of German ancestry. Gary Valentine, a comedian, and performer is James’ older brother, and Leslie Valentine is his sister. He and his siblings were brought up in a Catholic household. Ward Melville High School is where James graduated.
