Lesley Hornby was born in Neasden on September 19, 1949, and grew up there. Nellie Lydia Hornby, a factory worker for a printing firm, and William Norman Hornby, a skilled carpenter and joiner from Lancashire, had three daughters. Shirley, their first daughter, had been born 15 years prior, and Vivien, their second, had been born 7 years prior.
