O’Reilly was the only child of a civil servant, John O’Reilly (1906–1976), Aileen O’Connor (1914–1989), and was born in Dublin, Ireland.

O’Reilly’s father, a Drogheda native who became an inspector-general of customs, was born “Reilly” but changed his name to O’Reilly when he applied to join the Irish Civil Service.

John O’Reilly married Aileen O’Connor in 1973, after the death of his first wife and only a few months after telling his son about his other family.

He was previously married with four older children but estranged from his first wife. When O’Reilly was 15, he was told about the situation by a Jesuit, but he kept it hidden.
