Allen was born in Denver, Colorado, to community-service worker Martha Katherine and real estate agent Gerald M. Dick. He is the third child in a family of six. Allen has two older brothers, two younger brothers, and a younger sister, in addition to two younger brothers and a younger sister.
Allen’s father died in an automobile accident in November 1964, when he was 11 years old when he collided with a drunk driver. His mother married her high school sweetheart, a business executive, and relocated to Birmingham, Michigan, with her six children to live with her new husband and his three children two years later. According to Allen, the change meant going from “being in a hip group at one school to being at the bottom at another.”
