Martin was born on August 14, 1945, in Waco, Texas, to the real estate agent and aspiring actors Glenn Vernon Martin and Mary Lee.
Martin was reared in Inglewood, California, with sister Melinda Martin, and subsequently in Garden Grove, California, in a Baptist family, and is of English, Scottish, Welsh, Scots-Irish, German, and French origin. Martin was a Garden Grove High School cheerleader.
