Biagio Loggia, a shoemaker from Palma di Montechiaro, Province of Agrigento, Sicily, and Elena Blandino, a housewife from Vittoria, Province of Ragusa, Sicily, had Salvatore Loggia on Staten Island on January 3, 1930.

He grew up in the Little Italy district of New York City, where his family spoke Italian at home. He attended Wagner College after graduating from New Dorp High School. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a journalism degree in 1951. He went on to Northwestern University to study acting with Alvina Krause.
He married Marjorie Sloan in 1954 after serving in the US Army during the Korean War and began a long career at the Actors Studio, where he studied under Stella Adler.
