Early life
Culp was born in either Oakland or Berkeley, California, on August 16, 1930. Crozier Cordell Culp, an attorney, and his wife, Bethel Martin Culp, had only one child. He was a pole vaulter at Berkeley High School, where he finished second in the 1947 CIF California State Meet.

Culp did not complete his studies at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He went on to Washington University in St. Louis, San Francisco State University, and the University of Washington School of Drama, but never received a diploma. He acquired his acting training at New York City’s HB Studio.

Culp appeared in a number of theatrical films, beginning with three in 1963: PT 109 as naval officer John F. Kennedy’s close friend Ensign George Ross, The Raiders as famed gunman Wild Bill Hickok, and Sunday in New York as Jane Fonda’s debonair fiancé.
In 1969, he co-starred with Natalie Wood in the film Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. Another famous part was Thomas Luther Price, another gunslinger, opposite Raquel Welch in Hannie Caulder (1971). Hickey & Boggs reunited him with Cosby for the first time since I Spy a year later.
This feature film, in which Cosby and Culp play over-the-hill private investigators, was also directed by Culp. In 1986, he starred in the comedy Combat Academy as General Woods. In Alan J. Pakula’s 1993 murder mystery The Pelican Brief, Culp played the President of the United States.

From 1967 to 1970, Culp was married to Vietnamese-French actress France Nguyen, whom he met while she was a guest star on I Spy. She appeared in four episodes, two of which Culp wrote.
In 1969, Culp and Nuyen co-hosted the second episode of the infamous TV sitcom Turn-On, but the episode was never shown because the show was terminated shortly after its premiere.

Death
Culp died of a heart attack outside his Hollywood Hills home on March 24, 2010. He was laid to rest in El Cerrito’s Sunset View Cemetery. On April 10, 2010, a memorial service was conducted at Grauman’s Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles.
