Style and lyrical themes
Heavy metal, thrash metal, hard rock, and speed metal have all been used to define Metallica’s style of music. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Ted Nugent, AC/DC, Rush, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) bands Raven, Venom, Motörhead, Saxon, Diamond Head, Blitzkrieg, and Iron Maiden as well as the European bands’ Scorpions, Accept, and Mercyful Fate were all influences on the early heavy metal and hard rock bands and artists Metallica.
Metallica’s style was influenced by early punk rock bands like Ramones, Sex Pistols, and The Misfits as well as hardcore punk bands like Discharge, GBH, and Suicidal Tendencies. Iron Maiden has most likely had the most impact on Metallica’s career, according to Lars Urlich.
Legacy and influence
Along with Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth, Metallica is recognized as one of the “big four” of thrash metal and as one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time.
One of the most commercially successful bands of all time, Metallica has sold more than 125 million records worldwide, including 66 million RIAA-certified and 58,000,000 Nielsen SoundScan-reported copies in the US.
Metallica provided heavy metal “a much-needed charge,” according to the authors of The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll.
Metallica was praised by Stephen Thomas Erlewine and Greg Prato of Allmusic for “expanding the limits of thrash, using speed and volume, not for their own purpose, but to enhance their elaborately organized compositions” and for “bringing the music back to Earth” in the 1980s.
