Early life
Mala Sinha was born in West Bengal, India, to Christian Nepali parents who had come from the Nepalese plains. Albert Sinha was her father’s name.
Mala’s first name was Alda, but her classmates at school in Calcutta (now Kolkata) teased her by calling her Dalda (a brand of vegetable oil), so when she got her first job as a child artiste, she changed her name to Baby Nazma. She later changed her name to Mala Sinha as an adult actor.

She learned to dance and sing as a child. Despite being an All India Radio-approved singer, she has never performed playback singing in a film. From 1947 through 1975, she performed theatre productions in a variety of languages.

Mala Sinha was born in West Bengal, India, to Nepali parents who had come from the Nepalese plains. In 1966, Sinha married Nepali actor Chidambar Prasad Lohani, a Kumaoni Brahmin.
The pair met while working on the Nepalese film Maitighar (1966). Lohani ran a real estate agency. She used to come and remain in Mumbai after her marriage to shoot films while her husband ran his business in Nepal.
Pratibha Sinha, a former Bollywood actress, is her only child from the marriage. The couple and their daughter have lived in a bungalow in Bandra, Mumbai, since the late 1990s.
Her mother remained in her home till her death in April of this year. At Mala Sinha’s home, her daughter looks after stray dogs and kittens.
