Urban was born in the city of Wellington in the country of New Zealand. His mother worked for Film Facilities in Wellington, while his father, a German immigrant, managed a leather goods company. Urban was introduced to vintage New Zealand cinema by his mother when he was a child, and he developed an interest in the industry.
Urban went to St Mark’s Church School, where he developed an early interest in public speaking. At the age of eight, he had his first acting part in a single episode of the New Zealand television series Pioneer Woman, in which he had a single line.
