International Success
Khan won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture for his role as a police inspector in the 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, for which he and the rest of the cast were nominated.
“He has an uncanny way of identifying the ‘moral centre’ of any character,” Danny Boyle remarked of him, “such that in Slumdog Millionaire, we feel the policeman might truly determine that Jamal is innocent.” Boyle likened him to an athlete who can repeat the same action flawlessly time after time.
He made an appearance in the film Acid Factory. In the Mira Nair directed chapter of the 12-part film New York, I Love You, he played an FBI agent opposite Natalie Portman as a Gujarati diamond seller.
He appeared in the third season of HBO’s In Treatment, like Sunil, a man struggling to come to terms with his wife’s death and loneliness after moving to the Brooklyn borough of New York City.
Other Work
Khan has been named the brand ambassador for the Rajasthan state government’s “Resurgent Rajasthan” campaign. He contributed his voice to the light and sound performance at the Indian army’s war memorial on Vidhan Sabha Road in Jaipur. The presentation depicted the valour and bravery of Rajasthani troops, as well as their battle victories in the past and present.
Personal life
Khan married Sutapa Sikdar, a writer and fellow NSD graduate. Babil and Ayan are their two sons.
He altered his first name’s spelling from “Irfan” to “Irrfan” in 2012 because he loved the sound of the extra “r” in his name. He eventually omitted the “Khan” from his name because, in a 2016 interview, he stated that he wanted his work to define him rather than his heritage.
Illness and Death
Khan reported on Twitter in March 2018 that he has been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour. In February 2019, he returned to India after a year of treatment in the United Kingdom.
On April 28, 2020, he was hospitalised at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he began treatment for a colon infection. He died the next day as a result of the infection. Saeeda Begum, his mother, had died just four days before in Jaipur at the age of 93.
