Salim and Abike Olajuwon, working-class Yoruba cement company owners in Lagos, Nigeria, gave birth to Olajuwon. In his debut season, Olajuwon averaged 20.6 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.68 blocks. In the 1985 Rookie of the Year voting, he came in second to Michael Jordan and was the only other rookie to garner any votes.
Professional career
Under NBA Coach of the Year Chaney, the Rockets ended the 1990–91 season with a 52–30 record. Olajuwon averaged 21.8 points per game in 1990–91, however, he did not play in enough games (56) to qualify for the rebounding title due to an injury to his eyesocket caused by an elbow from Bill Cartwright.
Otherwise, he would have won it for the third year in a row, averaging 13.8 points per game (league leader Robinson averaged 13.0 rpg). He also led the league in blocks with 3.95 per game. The Rockets, on the other hand, were swept by the LA Lakers in the playoffs.
National team career
Olajuwon competed for a Nigerian junior squad in the All-Africa Games in 1980, before moving to the United States. When he first tested out for the United States men’s national basketball team, this caused some issues.
Players are prohibited from representing more than one country in international competition, and any change in nationality requires a three-year waiting period. Olajuwon was not eligible for the “Dream Team” because he had not yet become a US citizen.
Personal life
On August 8, 1996, Olajuwon married his present wife, Dalia Asafi, in Houston. The couple has four children together: Rahmah and Aisha, two daughters, and Abdullah and Abdul, two sons.
Olajuwon is also the father of Abisola, a daughter from a prior relationship with Lita Spencer, whom he met in college. Abisola played in the WNBA and represented the West Girls in the McDonald’s All-American Game.
