The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
McCallum’s Beatle-style blond hairdo provided a stylish contrast to Vaughn’s clean-cut image in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which was meant as a vehicle for Robert Vaughn. McCallum’s role as Illya Kuryakin, a mystery Russian agent, was originally intended to be a minor one.
McCallum, on the other hand, used the chance to create a multifaceted figure whose attraction was entirely based on what was mysterious and shady about him.
The producers quickly recognised Kuryakin’s appeal with the audience, as well as Vaughn and McCallum’s on-screen chemistry, and McCallum was promoted to co-star status.
Music
McCallum collaborated with music producer David Axelrod on four albums for Capitol Records in the 1960s: Music…A Part of Me (Capitol ST 2432, 1966), Music…A Bit More of Me (Capitol ST 2498, 1966), Music…Happening It’s Now! (Capitol ST 2651, 1967), and McCallum (Capitol ST 2651, 1967).
“The Edge,” which was sampled by Dr Dre as the opening and riff to the tune “The Next Episode,” “M.I.A” by Missin’ Linx, “No Regrets” by Masta Ace, and “Actions” by John Legend are among his most well-known works today. The song “The Edge,” performed by McCallum, is featured on the soundtrack of the 2017 film Baby Driver.
