Early life
Bautista was born in Washington, D.C., on January 18, 1969, to Donna Raye and hairdresser David Michael Bautista. His mother is a Greek immigrant, and his father is a Filipino immigrant. His paternal grandfather was a member of the Philippine military who also worked as a taxi driver and barber, among other things, to help support the family.
Bautista has stated that he grew up in poverty and had a difficult childhood, claiming that three murders occurred on his front lawn before he was nine years old. He started stealing automobiles when he was 13 years old. He was alienated from his parents and living on his own by the age of 17.

He worked as a nightclub bouncer until he was detained following a brawl in which two patrons were hurt, one of whom was knocked out. He was sentenced to one year of probation after a trial. Before pursuing a career in bodybuilding, he worked as a lifeguard and credits the latter with saving his life.
Bautista said he chose to change his life and become a wrestler after suffering a nervous breakdown over the guilt he felt after borrowing money from a coworker to purchase his children’s Christmas presents.

Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker informed Bautista that he would never make it in the wrestling profession when he tried out at the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) Power Plant.
He then went to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), who encouraged him to train and compete in Afa Anoa’i’s World Xtreme Wrestling (WXW) promotion at the Wild Samoan Training Center wrestling school.
