Ward was born Bert John Gervis Jr. in Los Angeles, California, on July 6, 1945. His father, Bert Sr., was the owner of the “Rhapsody On Ice” traveling ice show. Ward was mentioned as a professional ice skater in the magazine Strange as It Seems when he was two years old.
