Philip Anthony Hopkins was born on December 31, 1937, in the Margam neighborhood of Port Talbot, to Annie Muriel and baker Richard Arthur Hopkins. “Whenever I get the idea that I might be exceptional or unusual, I think of my father and I remember his hands – his tough, damaged hands,” he said, recalling his father’s working-class values.
His school days were fruitless; he preferred to spend his time doing art, such as painting and drawing, or playing the piano, rather than studying. His parents insisted that he attend Jones’ West Monmouth Boys’ School in Pontypool in 1949 to instill discipline.
