Pankaj Kapur was born in the Punjabi city of Ludhiana on May 29, 1954. While growing up in Punjab, he completed his studies and had a deep interest in theatre and performing. To further his interest, he enrolled at the National School of Drama.
In 1979, he married actress and dancer Neelima Azeem. They settled in New Delhi, where Shahid Kapoor, their only child, was born in 1981. In 1984, the couple divorced.
