Shue was born in the Delaware city of Wilmington. His mother, Anne Brewster, is a bank executive who served as vice president of the Chemical Bank Corporation’s private division. His father, James William Shue, was a lawyer and real estate developer who served as president of the International Food and Beverage Corporation and was involved in Republican politics, having run for the United States Congress in New Jersey unsuccessfully once.
His mother was a descendent of Pilgrim leader William Brewster, and his father hailed from Pennsylvania and was of German heritage. Shue went to Maplewood, New Jersey’s Columbia High School.

In 1994, he was honoured into the CHS Hall of Fame alongside his sister. Shue was a Regional All-American soccer player at Dartmouth College while still in high school, and he spent a winter studying and playing soccer for Queen’s Park FC in Glasgow, Scotland.
