Further Success
He then appeared alongside Mohanlal in R. V. Udayakumar’s Rajakumaran, his hundredth film, before playing well-received roles in K. Balachander’s love comedy Duet (1994) and Priyadarshan’s Malayalam period thriller Kaalapani (1996).
After the success of Panchalankurichi, Prabhu went through another dry spell in the late 1990s, when multiple films after the success of Panchalankurichi failed to do well, pushing him to shift his image away from village do-gooder roles.
Moving away from action films in the early 2000s, Prabhu chose screenplays for family audiences and teamed with filmmakers such as Rama Narayanan and T. P. Gajendran on a series of “minimum guarantee” return films.
Prabhu then switched gears and began accepting film offers in which he would play a supporting rather than a leading part, starring with Kamal Haasan and later Rajinikanth in two big-budget productions, Vasool Raja MBBS (2004) and his own Chandramukhi (2005).
Since then, he’s received acclaim for parts such as a kind guardian in Unakkum Enakkum, Thaamirabharani, and Ayan, as well as detective roles in action films such as Billa (2007) and subsequently Kanthaswamy (2009).
He’s also appeared in Mani Ratnam’s Raavanan (2010) and Aishwarya Dhanush’s 3 (2012), as well as Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam films in similar roles.
Prabhu appeared in his 200th film, Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum, produced by his nephew Dushyanth Ramkumar, in 2016.
