Early life
Galifianakis was born in the North Carolina town of Wilkesboro. His father, Harry, was a heating oil distributor, and his mother, Mary Frances, was the owner of a community arts center.
His paternal grandparents, Mike Galifianakis and Sophia Kastrinakis were emigrants from Crete, Greece, while his mother is of Scottish descent. Galifianakis was baptized at the Greek Orthodox church of his father.
