Kohli, along with his Under-19 colleagues Pradeep Sangwan and Tanmay Srivastava, received the Border-Gavaskar scholarship in June 2008.
The three youngsters were able to train for six weeks at Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Brisbane thanks to the scholarship.
He was also included in India’s Emerging Players squad for the four-team Emerging Players Tournament, where he scored 206 runs at a 41.20 average in six matches.
Kohli was named to the Indian ODI squad for the tour of Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in August 2008. Kohli had only played eight List A matches prior to the Sri Lankan tour.
As a result, his call-up was dubbed a “surprise call-up.” Kohli batted as a makeshift opener throughout the Sri Lankan tour because both first-choice openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were injured.
At the age of 19, he made his international debut in the first ODI of the tour and was removed for 12 runs. In the fourth match, he scored 54 for his first ODI half-century.
In the other three matches, he had scores of 37, 25 and 31. India won the series 3–2, marking the country’s first ODI series victory in Sri Lanka.
Rise through the ranks
Due to the absence of many first-choice players, Raina was selected captain and Kohli vice-captain for the tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe in May–June 2010.
Kohli scored 168 runs at 42.00, including two fifties, but India lost three of their four matches and was eliminated from the series.
Kohli became the fastest Indian batsman to score 1,000 runs in ODI cricket during the series. He scored an unbeaten 26 on his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in Harare.
Kohli batted at 3 in an Indian team at the 2010 Asia Cup, scoring 67 runs at an average of 16.75. In the tri-series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Sri Lanka, his difficulties with form persisted, with him averaging 15.
Style of play
Kohli is a naturally aggressive hitter with excellent technique. In ODI cricket, he usually bats at number three. With a slightly open chest and a firm bottom-hand grip, he bats.
He isn’t a big hitter and prefers to hit shots that are more grounded. He’s noted for his diverse shot repertoire, ability to pace an innings, and ability to bat under duress.
He has a lot of power in the mid-wicket and cover areas. He has stated that his favourite shot is the cover drive, but that the flick shot comes effortlessly to him.
He is described as “not a natural sweeper of the cricket ball” since he rarely uses the sweep stroke. Kohli is a master of the leg stump line. He plays a flick shot if bowled at leg stump.
Kohli began dating Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma in 2013, and the duo quickly got the moniker “Virushka.” Their connection drew a lot of media interest, with rumours and theories circulating because neither of them openly discussed it.
The pair married in a private ceremony in Florence, Italy on December 11, 2017. Vamika, their baby girl, was born on January 11, 2021.
