Director Pavithran gave Prabhu Deva his first main part in the love drama film Indhu after a string of cameo roles in Tamil movie songs (1994).

In Shankar’s second film, the romantic drama Kadhalan (1994), where he played a young student who first opposes his lover’s father and then a foreign terrorist, he achieved success as an actor.
Four National Film Awards were given to the movie for its technical excellence, while A. R. Rahman’s music and Deva’s choreography, particularly in the songs “Mukkabla” and “Urvasi Urvasi,” became immensely popular in India.
Even though it featured a number of relative unknowns, the movie went on to become the top-grossing Tamil film of 1994, and its box office success helped establish Deva as a bankable performer.
The movie’s Telugu and Hindi dubs were also successful, giving Deva a market in other Indian regional industries.

Deva, on the other hand, received a double role in Mr Romeo with Shilpa Shetty and Madhoo for a fairly hefty fee of 60 lakhs.
