Guptill represents Auckland in domestic cricket and Suburbs New Lynn in club cricket. In March 2006, he made his first-class cricket debut, hitting a four-ball duck in his maiden innings and a century in his second.

In March 2009, he made his Test cricket debut against India, hitting 14 and 48 in the first Test at Hamilton. The ICC nominated him to the World ODI XI for his performances in 2009.


Guptill scored an unbeaten 237 from 163 balls against West Indies in the quarter-finals at Westpac Stadium in Wellington, surpassing his previous best score from the 2015 World Cup.

His wife, Laura McGoldrick, is a journalist and reporter, and his cousin, Michael Guptill-Bunce, has also played cricket for Auckland.

Guptill’s left foot has only two toes. He lost three toes in a forklift accident when he was 13 years old. Within the New Zealand cricket team, he is known as “Two Toes.”
