Deepak Gambhir, a textiles business owner, and Seema Gambhir, a homemaker, raised Gambhir in New Delhi. Ekta, Gambhir’s younger sister, is two years his junior. In 1947, his grandfather moved from Multan to Delhi.

Eighteen days after his birth, Gambhir was adopted by his maternal grandparents and has lived with them ever since. Gambhir began playing cricket when he was ten years old.
