Early life
King was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated from John Adams High School in 1951.
He conducted an illegal bookmaking company out of the basement of a record store on Kinsman Road after dropping out of Kent State University, and he was accused of the murders of two men 13 years apart.
After it was discovered that King shot Hillary Brown in the back and killed him while attempting to loot one of King’s gambling houses in 1954, it was declared to be a justified homicide.
After being found guilty of stomping to death an employee, Sam Garrett, who owed him $600, King was convicted of second-degree murder in 1967.
He did his sentence at the Marion Correctional Institution, where he began self-education by reading whatever he could get his hands on in the prison library.
