Early life

Karloff was born William Henry Pratt on November 23, 1887, in Dulwich, Surrey (now London), England, at 36 Forest Hill Road. Edward John Pratt, Jr. and Eliza Sarah Millard were his parents.

Sir John Thomas Pratt, his brother, was a British ambassador. Karloff’s mother also had some Indian lineage, thus he had a darker complexion than his contemporaries at the time.

Edward John Pratt, Jr. was an Anglo-Indian, born of a British father and an Indian mother, while Karloff’s mother also had some Indian ancestry.

Anna Leonowens, his mother’s maternal aunt, wrote a musical based on her stories of life in the royal court of Siam (now Thailand). Pratt was bow-legged, spoke with a lisp, and stuttered like a child. He learned to control his stutter, but not his lisp, which he carried with him throughout his cinematic career.

Before being discovered by James Whale and cast in Frankenstein, Karloff appeared in eighty films (1931). Karloff’s part as Frankenstein’s monster was physically difficult, requiring a massive costume with four-inch platform boots, yet the costume and elaborate makeup left an indelible impression.

Karloff’s costume was a full-time work in and of itself, with the shoes weighing 11 pounds (5.0 kg) each. The makeup design for Jack P. Pierce’s Frankenstein monster was promptly copied by Universal Studios.
