V. D. Swamy, an industrialist, and Vasantha, a Bharatanatyam dancer, are Swamy’s parents. Swamy attended Sishya School, Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School, and P. S. Senior Secondary School before graduating in 1987.

In 1990, he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Loyola College in Madras. He subsequently travelled to Wake Forest University in North Carolina to get his master’s degree in international business.
