Early life and childhood
On October 16, 1925, Lansbury was born into an upper-middle-class family. Although her birthplace has been widely reported to be Poplar, East London, she has denied this, claiming that she was born in Regent’s Park, Central London, despite having ancestral ties to the area.
Her mother, the Belfast-born actress Moyna Macgill, was a regular on the West End stage and had also acted in a number of films. Edgar Lansbury, a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and past mayor of the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar, was her father, a wealthy English timber merchant and politician.
