Palekar began his career in Marathi experimental theatre alongside Satyadev Dubey before forming Aniket in 1972. He appeared in popular plays such as Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe, Hayavadana, and Adhe Adhure a stage actor.
He returned to theatre after a 25-year hiatus with the dramatic play Kusur, which he performed on stage at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in 1994. He also plays the lead part in this play, which he directs.
