Early life
McKeown was born on May 21, 1946, in Ealing, London. Edith Mabel and Albert Victor McKeown relocated to Hainault, Essex, after first settling in Hackney.

His father was the new estate’s Clerk of Works. He attended Beal Grammar School in Ilford before leaving to work as a trainee hairdresser at Vidal Sassoon on Bond Street.
He was a prominent character in the 1960s London scene, and in 1966 he founded his own salon. He worked as a hairstylist on the TV show Sunday Night at the London Palladium, as well as the films if…. (1968), Villain, and Get Carter (both 1971).
