Winter was born in London, the capital of England. Margaret “Gregg” Mayer, his mother, is a former Martha Graham dancer from New York who formed a modern dance group in London in the mid-1960s.
Ross Albert Winter, Winter’s father, is an Australian who performed with his mother’s group. Winter had dance lessons as a child. Stephen, his older brother, is his only sibling. His father is of English origin, while his mother is Jewish, descended from Ukrainian Jews.
