Early life
Adam West was born William West Anderson in Walla Walla, Washington, on September 19, 1928. His father, Otto Anderson, was a farmer from Scania, Sweden, and his mother, Audrey Volenne, was an opera singer and concert pianist who gave up her Hollywood dreams to care for her family.
Following in her footsteps, West told his father when he was a teenager that he wanted to go to Hollywood after finishing school. Following his parents’ divorce, he went to Seattle with his mother when he was 15 years old. West went to Walla Walla High School for his freshman and sophomore years before enrolling in Seattle’s Lakeside School.
During the autumn semester of 1949, he attended Whitman College but studied at the University of Puget Sound. Whitman College at Walla Walla awarded him a bachelor’s degree in literature with a minor in psychology, and he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity’s Gamma Zeta Chapter.
He was also a member of the debate and speech teams. He was drafted into the US Army and worked as a television broadcaster for the American Forces Network. He worked as a milkman after his discharge before moving to Hawaii to pursue a career in television.
